- RST = Right Sides Together
- 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.
- Read through all directions before beginning.Β
Project Supplies Needed:Β
- 1 Quilt Block at least 11" x 11"Β
- 1 Piece of Fabric the same size for the backing of the bib.
- Thin fusible felt for a thicker bib
- Ribbon, double bias tape or fabric strips for the ties, 2 pieces at least 12".
- 1 Printed Bib Template
Step 1
Fabric Prep
Start by ironing your block or whole piece of fabric nice and flat. I used a strip pieced block that was about 11" x 11" square.Β
Step 2
Iron On Felt
Iron interfacing or felt to the back of your block, it shouldn't be too thick or stiff, you can also skip this step if you'd like a thinner bib that lays more naturally.Β
Step 3
Quilt the Panel
This is actually my favorite, I put my stitch length up super high (4mm-5mm) and stitch straight lines across the panel. It's so fun!Β
Step 4
Cut out the Pattern
Print out and tape together the Paper Pattern. Cut around the solid line. If you'd like to make your bib smaller or the neckhole wider, now is the time to make adjustments with fading ink. Trace around the paper pattern on the backside of your quilted panel.Β
Step 5
Backing the Bib
Grab your backing fabric, and ribbons or double fold bias tape. Carefully sandwich the backing face up, the ties, and the cut out bib top face down. Move the ties so just the ends peek out from the tops of the bib, making sure the ties are almost exactly in the middle.Β
Note: For those using double fold bias tape, open up one end of the tape, fold it in on itself by about .5", fold it back together, sew down the open long edge to create ties.Β
Step 6
Tie Placement
Double check that placement! We don't want the ties to get caught on the edges of where we're sewing. If you're using wider ribbon, consider folding it in half, so it won't get caught when you're sewing. The only edge that should be catching the ties is the very top edge.Β
Step 7
Pin the Perimeter
Pin around the perimeter of the bib. Leave a 2" opening, I usually mark it with pins so I don't forget when I'm at the sewing machine!
Step 8
Sew Around the Bib
Using a 1/4" seam allowance (let's get real, I almost always use a scant 1/4" out of habit so feel free to do that as well). Turning and pivoting around the tight corners.Β
Make sure to leave that 2" opening!
Tip: Lower your needle, lift your foot and turn your fabric to get out of tight spots.Β
Step 9
Trim the Outside
I trimmed it very closely, about 1/8", this helps the bib not have puckering around the curves. If you'd like to trim it with a wider seam that you can iron, make small cuts around the perimeter to ease the tension of the fabric around the curves.Β
Step 10
Fluff the Bib
That's a technical term, jk, push it out through the opening so it's right side out. You might be worried about getting those little ends out, but MAGIC, just pull gently on the ties, and they'll pull themselves right out!
Step 11
Push in the Hole
Carefully fold in the opening so that it matches the rest of the bib seam allowance. It should have a slight curve, and you're going to hate it, I'm sorry. But after some massaging, it'll look great.Β
Step 12
Pin that Baby Down
Not the actual baby, although diaper changes are mini wrestling matches sometimes! Pin the opening that you've very carefully folded in.Β
Step 13
Top Stitch
Top stitch around the entire edge of the boho baby big taking care to catch all of the folded layers. Going around the curve can be difficult, go slow, shorten your stitch length if needed and remember to lower your needle to pivot around short turns.Β
Congrats! You've just made the cutest bib!
A fantastic way to use up blocks, scrap fabric, or even your favorite fabrics! These bibs are so versatile and fun. I can't wait to toss some into my next baby shower baskets as gifts.Β
