Scrunchie Zipper Bag

They go everywhere! In your hair, under your bed, in the car, I basically have them everywhere. Except on a zipper tote bag which is exactly why I designed this cute zipper bag!  Join us in this exciting sewing adventure where we transform a quilt block into a trendy and versatile zipper bag.

Step-By-Step Tutorial

- Scrunchie Zipper Bag -

Project Notes:

  • RST = Right Sides Together
  • 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.
  • Read through all directions before beginning.
  • You'll need a zipper foot for easier zipper installation

Project Supplies Needed:

  • 1 Quilt Block  - I used one that was roughly 12.5" x 12.5"
  • Fabric for the lining of the zipper bag, the same size as the quilt block.
  • 1 zipper 12" long (or however long your block is)
  • Iron-on felt interfacing for a thicker pouch
  • 10" length of elastic
  • 3.5" x 22" rectangle of fabric for the scrunchie
Step 1

Iron Felt to Quilt Block

Iron the felt interfacing to the wrong side of your quilt block. Make sure it's securely ironed onto the block.

Step 2

Quilt the Block

Quilt the block and felt together. Use any design that you'd like, because we'll be cutting this, use a smaller stitch length.

Note: I used a longer stitch length and they started to unravel after cutting so learn from my mistakes!

Step 3

Cut the Block in Half

Cut your quilt block in half using a long ruler. Cut your lining fabric to be exactly the same size as your block halves.

Step 4

Zipper Placement

Lay your lining rectangle face up. Lay your zipper length face up along the top of the lining rectangle, matching up the edges.

Step 5

Zipper and First Outside

Lay one of the outside panels face down to create a sandwich. Again, align the top edges. I put my zipper pull about 3/4 down so I don't encounter it right at the beginning.

Step 6

Clip The Layers

Clip or pin these layers together.

Step 7

Sew The Zipper

Install your zipper foot and move the needle over so that it will land about 1/8" from the zipper teeth. When you come to the zipper pull, move your needle into the lowered position, lift your foot, move your zipper pull back so that it's behind the foot, lower your foot and keep sewing.

Note: To make this easier, some people baste stitch the zipper first to the lining and then adding the thicker quilted layer. This is totally optional.

Step 8

What It Should Look Like

This is what your side should like, the lining, the zipper, and then the outside panel.

Step 9

Fold It Open

Fold open your pouch and it should look like this.

Step 10

The Zipper Should Be Facing..

The top, I've made this mistake before, make sure you're sewing with the zipper pull facing up towards the outside of the bag.

Step 11

Sewing The Opposite Side

Lay the second rectangle of lining fabric right side up. Place the zipper bag on the rectangle lining up the top edge of the zipper and the top edge of the lining fabric.

Step 12

Lay The Second Outside Half

Lay the second half of the outside quilted panel, face down. The two outside panels should be facing each other. Align the top edges.

Step 13

Clip or Pin

Clip all the layers together into a sandwich, I try to line up the edges of the outside panels so they will sit exactly opposite each other when the zipper is opened.

Step 14

Sew The Zipper

Repeat the steps from previously to sew the zipper onto the opposite side. Fold open so that the side panels and lining rectangles are on each side. Iron flat.

Step 15

Top Stitch

Optional step, top stitch down both edges next to the zipper, this step helps flatten the layers down and adds a professional finish. This picture shows the top stitching on one side.

Step 16

Make the Scrunchie

This is the burrito method and it's wild how it all comes together! Sew the rectangle of fabric at the short ends to create a circle of fabric.

Step 17

Scrunch The Scrunchie

Take one long edge and scrunch or roll it up.

Step 18

Keep Scrunching

Make sure it's centered over the other half of the strip, now grab some pins or clips.

Step 19

Clip or Pin

I'm lazy but for those of us perfectionists, clip the long edges together, wrapping up the scrunched part. Make sure none of the scrunched part is caught on the edges or clipped/pinned on accident.

Step 20

Sew The Burrito

Start sewing in the middle somewhere (1/4" seam allowance). As you sew.. this is where things get weird (but cool, stay with me), start to pull out the bottom gently so that you keep having more

Step 21

Keep Sewing

Keep going until you have about 2" left, backstitch and clip your thread. You should have one giant tube of fabric with an opening.

Step 22

Pull The Elastic Through

Using elastic is optional, if you'd like your scrunchie handle to be less bouncy, feel free to use ribbon or string. Pull it all the way through and then knot the ends.

Step 23

Turn It Rightside Out

Once you've knotted it, turn the entire scrunchie right side out through the little 2" opening we left.

Note: This is a perfect method for making scrunchies! If you'd like, top stitch the opening closed after turning to make lots of easy scrunchies.

Step 24

Scrunchie Placement

Gather the open bit and scrunch it up right under the zipper on the right side. This placement is completely up to you, I wanted mine in the corner, but you can also have yours on the opposite side or even the bottom!

Step 25

Clip Or Pin

Fold over just the outside panel so it sandwiches the scrunchie, there should be bits of scrunchie on the outside. Next pin the opposite side with both lining pieces facing each other. Leave a 2" opening in the lining.

Step 26

Sew The Perimeter

Sew around the entire zipper bag with a 1/4" or 3/8" seam allowance. Make sure to leave an opening in the lining and to back stitch to secure the edges of the opening. Go slow over the thicker parts.

Tip: increase your seam allowance by a little bit when going around the lining, this will allow it to sit a little better in the zipper pouch.

Step 27

Sew The Opening Closed

Pull everything right side out and sew the opening in the lining closed. you can do this by machine and folding it in and then sewing close to the edge OR by hand with small whip stitches.

Congrats! You've just made the cutest Scrunchie Pouch!

Just wait until you've got your scrunchie pouch out and about, people are going to flock, I know I've already had 3 people ask where I bought it (little do they know.. wink)
