- RST = Right Sides Together
- 1/4" seam allowance unless otherwise noted.
- Read through all directions before beginning.
Project Supplies Needed:
- 1 Quilt Block at least 11" x 11" - I used 5 small scrap blocks that I sewed up using small pieces of leftover fabrics.
- Fabric for the back of the scrappy blocks, cut to the same size.
- A wool ball, button, ribbon, or anything else you'd like for the center of your flower.
- 1 rectangle of fabric 3.5" x 11" folded in half, and then both sides folded in to make double fold tape for the lanyard part of the keychain.
- 1 metal keyring (I stole mine from an old keychain).
- Optional: Fray Check
Step 1
Fabric Prep
Iron your improve or scrappy blocks super flat. Cut down some background fabric to be the same size as the blocks.
Step 2
Trace the Petals
Print out your petals and trace around the perimeter with an erasable marker or chalk on the wrong side of the backing fabric.
Step 3
Continue Tracing
Continue tracing until there are about 6-12 flower petals. My final flower had 6 large petals. You can make any kind of flower you'd like!
Step 4
Layer the Quilt Blocks
Lay each quilt block face down on the face up backing fabric. Make sure the lines are showing on the bottom. Pin around the exterior of the blocks to secure them together while you sew.
Step 5
Sew Around the Petals
Sew around the perimeter of the petals, leaving a hole at the bottom of each petal (to turn later). I sewed .25" inside the traced line to make my petals a little smaller. You can sew directly on the line as well, it's completely up to you!
To sew around narrow parts or make sharp turns, lower your needle, lift your foot and turn the block.
Tip: I used a small stitch length to make sure I could make the sharper turns and to ensure the stitching wouldn't come out later when turning right side out.
Step 6
Cut Around the Petals
Cut very closely around the petals, cutting straight across the open part. If you'd prefer to leave the seam wider, make sure to ease the tension by making small cuts into the seam allowance (that don't cross the seam!).
Step 7
Push the Petals Right Side Out
Let's push those cute petals out! using a small blunt object (I found a hex wrench worked perfectly), gently push it through the opening. You'll get the hang of it after a few petals!
Step 8
Fray Check
Apply fray check to the ends of your petals, or fold them into the petal. Arrange the petals to make a flower design with the larger ones on bottom.
Hand or machine sew the petals together in the middle, overlapping so all the petals are secured.
I ended up folding the small ends under by about .25" and then stacking and sewing together.
Step 9
Iron Double Fold Tape
Iron your rectangle in half, fold the long edges into the center to create one long strip. Alternatively use ribbon or webbing.
Step 10
Sew Down the Edges
Feed the strip through the keyring on one side. Fold the strip over on itself and then again fold under. Stitch an "X" or a box and some lines to secure it.
Step 11
Attach Keyring
Carefully fold in the opening so that it matches the rest of the bib seam allowance. It should have a slight curve, and you're going to hate it, I'm sorry. But after some massaging, it'll look great.
Step 12
Finish Lanyard
Repeat the previous steps of folding, trimming as needed to get a lanyard that is your desired length.
Step 13
Secure Lanyard
Hand stitch the lanyard to the flower, making sure to keep your stitches tight and secure. We don't want any flowers flying off! I tried to match my hand stitches with the machine stitches from the lanyard so they weren't as apparent.
Step 14
Sew On the Wool Ball
Grab your wool ball, push your needle through the edge of your lanyard (or pull it down gently, so your knot is under the lanyard) so your needle is coming up the top of your flower and push the wool ball through your needle. Pull the ball down and push your needle down again through the ball, right next to your last stitch.
Push your needle so it comes back out underneath the lanyard and knot it.
I secured the edges of my petals with some looser stitches to the edge of the wool ball but that is optional.
Step 15
Finished Keychain
This is what the finished keychain should look like.
Note: I added a few stitches to the sides of the wool ball, to the very bottom of the petals, to pull the petals up a bit towards the wool ball.
Finished Keychain
Another look at what the keychain should look like!
Congrats! You've just made the cutest keychain!
A fantastic way to use up blocks, scrap fabric, or even your favorite fabrics! These keychains are a blast, I've already got requests from the backpack wearing members of my family to make more!
